Rockwell joins Pitt in Cogan's Trade...
Sam Rockwell has joined Brad Pitt in the film Cogan's Trade from writer and director Andrew Dominik. The film is an adaptation of the George V. Higgins novel which follows an enforcer for the Mafia who is called in to sort things out when a high-stakes card game which is under the Mafia's protection becomes the victim of a heist. There are double dealings and all sorts going on in the background and the expert enforcer uses various methods to sort everything out.

Pitt will be playing the enforcer Jackie Cogan and there's still no confirmation on the rumour of Casey Affleck joining the Pitt-Dominik pairing from The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. The story comes from Deadline through Coming Soon.

Portman confirms Wachowski-Tykwer Cloud Atlas...
Natalie Portman has confirmed that the Wachowski Brothers and Tom Tykwer have teamed up together to direct an adaptation of David Mitchell's novel Cloud Atlas (Amazon.co.uk / Amazon.com). The word now is that they will co-direct sections of the film. Portman says she read the book during filming for V for Vendetta and passed it onto the Wachowski's as well as onto Tykwer during the Paris Je t'aime (Filmstalker review) filming.

She says that she doesn't know about the financing but they are working together and she will get a non-major role in it, probably as thanks for passing on the book to them. The story spreads across multiple main characters, multiple time periods and multiple genres. So it's not really much of a challenge for them.

The story comes through The Playlist and First Showing, and reflects the previous stories here on Filmstalker. Definitely one to watch out for, but I'm convinced it's years and years away.

Arterton and Renner in Hansel and Gretel?...
Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters may have gained its Gretel according to The Hollywood Reporter. They say that Gemma Arterton has joined to star alongside Jeremy Renner as the brother and sister in Tommy Wirkola's dark retelling of the fairy tale. I'm a growing fan of Arterton, The Disappearance of Alice Creed really showed a different side of her as an actress, and it was an impressive one.

McG directing Oujia?...
McG is in negotiations to direct Oujia according to The Hollywood Reporter who say he beat Breck Eisner's pitch for the film which will be about a family and a Oujia board. Wooo. A board game film crossed with a ghostie film.

Monsters Inc. 2 a prequel?...
Monsters Inc. 2 will be a prequel according to the reports from Animatie through Twitch. It will see the excellent characters of Mike and Sulley back in the days when they were students training to be scary. At first they didn't like each other but through the course of their adventures they end up as friends. Sounds a good way to handle another Monsters Inc. film rather than a sequel, but still, do we need it? Can't we get something new and exciting?

Chinese Bigfoot 3D...
The news from 24FPS through Quiet Earth is that China is planning a 3D Bigfoot film that is described as "Avatar-like" and will follow a group of scientists tracking down the creature in the remote mountains of the Hubei Province. Sounds more like a 3D Thing to me. It's currently titled Primary Zone.

Franco directing Faulkner and McCarthy...
According to Showbiz411 through First Showing, James Franco is in negotiations to direct an adaptation of the William Faulkner novel As I Lay Dying and an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's novel Blood Meridian. It seems very ambitious as the reports are that Michael Haneke and Ridley Scott are just two directors who were trying to get Blood Meridian off the ground and didn't see it happen. Add to that the complexities of As I Lay Dying which has multiple points of view and uses inner voices of characters and he's really going for the most difficult job he could possibly with these adaptations. Surprising projects for such a young actor.

Foster in Blomkamp's Elysium...
Jodie Foster is set to join Neill Blomkamp's Elysium according to Deadline. The film already has Matt Damon and Sharlto Copley signed to star. She's such a great actress, perhaps one of my favourite, so I do get excited when she joins a film as she's also rather choosy about her roles.
