Stalked: Hallström's Hypnotist, Levy's Fantastic Voyage, Expectations for Newell, Bridges is an exorcist

Lasse Hallström directing Swedish The Hypnotist adaptation...

Levy's Fantastic Voyage...

Great Expectations for Newell...

Bridges is an exorcist...

Lasse Hallström is heading back to Sweden to adapt The Hypnotist, the best-selling novel by Lars Kepler (Amazon.co.uk / Amazon.com). It's no surprise to hear that the focus of the story is a Detective called Joona Linna who is investigating a terrible triple murder. The interesting bit here is that there is one survivor, a young boy who is just too traumatised to testify. The detective gets a leading psychologist to hypnotise the boy, something that the psychologist has sworn they would never do again, and uncovers far more than they bargained for. That's the story through The Hollywood Reporter and Playlist. If all goes well this looks like a trilogy.

Fantastic Voyage does look like it's going to get remade and this time it's in the hands of Shawn Levy. According to Deadline he's the one who has beaten some rather big named directors who had been meeting with 20th Century Fox and James Cameron for the job. The film will see a group of scientists and their space age vehicle miniaturised and placed inside the body of a hugely important person who has to be saved from a life threatening internal injury. They're on a timeline though, if they don't get out in time they'll return to normal size. Of course it's going 3D with Cameron.

Mike Newell is set to direct a new version of Great Expectations. The classic version is the David Lean film from 1946. The Hollywood Reporter has the news. Great expectations for Newell then.

Jeff Bridges is awesome. There you have it. No that's not the complete story, there's the fact that he looks like he's going to be playing an old exorcist passing on his skills to a new one. Sounds familiar? Perhaps it won't have a stupid end moment in the trailer that makes it look like a cheap joke horror movie (that's The Rite by the way). According to Just Jared through Empire this film is called The Seventh Son which is the first book in his children's series The Wardstone Chronicles (Amazon.co.uk / Amazon.com) which also goes by the name of The Last Apprentice: Revenge of the Witch in America. It is set in England in the eighteenth century where The Spook, the character Bridges will play, exorcises all manner of supernatural creatures and trains a young man who is the seventh son of a seventh son.

Apparently Alex Pettyfer and Jennifer Lawrence are up for roles, and while it sounds like The Sorcerer's Apprentice (Filmstalker review), let's hope it's much better. Interestingly Sergey Bodrov who directed Mongol is directing. Strange choice or expected epic?
