Update: Colombiana trailer, Besson's tough female assassin
The trailer for Colombiana might be hitting some familiar territory for some, particularly Luc Besson himself, but that's not a bad thing. There are all the plot marks you need for a film and character like this - the young character who saw their parents murdered; the growing up learning to be an assassin from another who took her under his wing; the need for revenge throughout her life; the killing of those guilty one by one as she carries out other jobs...it's all there.
However it's done with a lot of style and judging by the trailer a lot of depth. This isn't a simple action film and it looks like the character that Zoe Saldana is playing is going to be more than just a cold, faceless killer.
While we might have seen the character and situation in Colombiana before, and it might feel like Michael Vartan is playing a role similar to the one he did in Alias, there's a lot here that rises above the comparisons with other films, and a lot of that is to do with the fantastic Zoe Saldana.
Mind you, there's also Cliff Curtis, Lennie James and Graham McTavish, so it's not just a case of one big name actress leading the way, there are some good names behind her too, and with Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen writing the script that Olivier Megaton directed, we know what we're in for, a lot of stylish action.
Still, the trailer for Colombiana offers more and it does look exciting. Have a look and see what you think.
Update: Colombiana now has an Apple Trailers Quicktime high-definition trailer.
