The Skin I Live In teaser trailer intrigues
The teaser trailer for The Skin I Live In is really interesting, and tells us next to nothing, and yet coupled with the blurb there are ideas galore about the film popping into my head, and quite a few of them are rather interesting and disturbing.
The film is from Pedro Almodóvar who directed and adapted the story from Thierry Jonquet's novel. It stars Antonio Banderas and Elena Anaya, as well as a few other recognisable names, and there's next to nothing about the plot, and this eye catching teaser.
The Skin I Live In, or The Skin I Inhabit (La piel que habito) simply tells us that this is based on the Thierry Jonquet novel called Mygale (Amazon.co.uk / Amazon.com), and looking up Amazon doesn't tell us much more about it, however the book looks to be re-released (Amazon.co.uk / Amazon.com)with the film and there we find a little blurb relating to the film version:
Richard Lafargue is an eminent plastic surgeon haunted by dirty secrets. He has an operating theatre in the basement of his chateau and keeps his partner Eve imprisoned in her bedroom, a room he has equipped with an intercom and 300-watt speakers through which he bellows orders.
Eve is only allowed out to be paraded at cocktail parties and on the last Sunday of each month, when the couple visit a young woman in a mental asylum. Following these outings, Lafargue humiliates Eve by forcing her to perform lewd sexual acts with strangers while he watches through a one-way mirror.
In alternating chapters, Jonquet introduces seemingly unrelated characters - a criminal on the run after murdering a policeman, and an abducted young man who finds himself chained naked in a dark chamber, forced to endure all manner of physical torture at the hands of a mysterious stranger, whom he calls Mygale, after a type of tropical spider.
All of these characters are caught in a deceitful web, waiting to meet their fate.
It does sound interesting, and there's always a lot to be had from a story that takes characters and slowly weaves them together. However it's the idea of Antonio Banderas playing this character and what his motives and actions mean that have me intrigued the most, just what is he doing with his partner? Is he striving to make, maintain and keep the perfect woman?
The teaser trailer doesn't bother with anything else but this relationship, and it's certainly done the job with me, this is a teaser trailer.
