Tomb Raider reboot gains weight

TombRaider.jpgNo, I'm not referring to Lara Croft herself, but to the production of the next Tomb Raider film. It had been something we'd heard was going to happen but never really did, until now, and with the news that the production is moving on comes the announcement of the writers.

That news is good, but there's no news of who they are planning to play Lara Croft, and from what we know so far it won't see Angelina Jolie returning, which I think is a shame.

You know when people make sweeping statements about videogame adaptations being rubbish they seem to forget about Lara Croft: Tomb Raider which was a damn good adaptation and an enjoyable action film. Angelina Jolie was sexy, strong and looked and played the role perfectly and gave a good performance too, she was backed by Jon Voight, Iain Glen, Noah Taylor, Chris Barrie, Leslie Philips and even Daniel Craig.

An exciting story, filled with plenty of connections to the game and where the leading lady carried many of the moves and looks of the character from the game itself. If there was no connection to a videogame you could easily have seen the film work well on its own as an action adventure film with a strong leading female character, something that seems to be very common these days.

So all in all the film was one of the best videogame adaptations and a strong film on its own, and although the sequel, Lara Croft: The Cradle of Life isn't as strong, it's by no means a complete disaster.

It's no wonder they're looking at a new film in the series then, with the rise of the female action lead Lara Croft could do really well, however there's a big problem, they'll have to change the actress playing the character.

The good news from Deadline is that the writers of Iron Man and Cowboys & Aliens, Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, are on board to write the script for the new start, but the best Lara Croft we've seen on film and I would say amongst the models who have played her, won't be returning.

Angelina Jolie is off the list to play the character, she's moved onto other things, which is a shame as she looks the part. There's always Rhona Mitra who was originally a Lara Croft model before moving into acting, she also looks the part, is a good actress, and could play the role, however it would seem that the film are turning to someone much younger.

According to the article the production company behind the film are off looking for a younger actress to play the role, presumably one that would stay with a franchise if it kicked off again. Right now there's no idea who that would be, but can you think of a good choice?
