Spielberg's War Horse trailer
Steven Speilberg is directing the film version of War Horse, written by Lee Hall and Richard Curtis from the hugely successful Michael Morpurgo novel that's already been successfully adapted to the stage. It's starring a great cast of Emily Watson, David Thewlis, Peter Mullan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hiddleston, Toby Kebbell, Eddie Marsan, and more.
It's a great cast, but I fear it's not a great trailer. Perhaps it's great for those who know the War Horse story, for those who have seen the film before I wonder if this just feels like an overly emotional collection of moments.
Now don't get me wrong, I adore Steven Spielberg, I really do, give me Close Encounters of the Third Kind every day and I'll watch it and love Richard Dreyfuss in it just as much, every single time. Give me Always and I'll do just the same, but add Holly Hunter and John Goodman to that list too.
This trailer for War Horse though, everything is steeped in emotion and I struggled to see much else through it. I like the connection of the narrator and the horse where we don't really make the connection instantly, but then it lost me in overly romanticised images that barely seemed connected.
Perhaps I'm just not getting it because I haven't seen War Horse, read it, or know that much about it apart from how clever they were on stage with it.
Have a look for the trailer and see what you think. Perhaps it's just the trailer, perhaps it's just me.
