Stalked: Affleck; Tarzan; Beatty; Buckley; Bond; Hobbit; Superman; Cruise; Boyle, Trance; Lincoln; G.I. Joe; Kidman, Paperboy

I have a few stories to catch up on while I was away, and so here's the usual Stalked article, a list of some interesting titbits that I either couldn't flesh out to a full story, or were on the cusp, that means articles such as Ben Affleck directing himself in Argo, that is something I could write about, but for just one person who doesn't make any money on his site, I just can't find the time to do everything.

So here's one of a few Stalked articles appearing this week:

Ben Affleck directs and stars in Argo...

Tarzan director found...

Warren Beatty writing, directing and starring in new comedy...

Penn Badgley as Jeff Buckley...

Martin Campbell says Quantum of Solace was lousy...

Benedict Cumberbatch joins The Hobbit...

Superman casts Julia Ormond and Russell Crowe...

Tom Cruise to play Jack Reacher...

James McAvoy replaces Michael Fassbender in Trance...

David Strathairn joins Spielberg's Lincoln...

G.I. Joe sequel continues casting...

Nicole Kidman in talks for Paperboy...

Ben Affleck directs and stars in Argo...
Ben Affleck is a cracking director and is a superb actor, I never thought I'd say that earlier in his career. He's directing a film called Argo which is about a CIA team who create a fake film production in order to get a team out of Iran who were being held hostage, and yes it's based on a true story. Alan Arkin and John Goodman are in negotiations to star, now Affleck has cast himself in the lead according to Variety. No surprise there, and he's great at directing himself.

Tarzan director found...
Craig Brewer is set to write and direct a new version of Tarzan after he's finished with the Footloose remake according to Variety. This remake has been ongoing for years now with Guillermo del Toro, Stephen Sommers, Stuart Beattie and John August all involved in either writing or directing the film over the years, but now it's down to Brewer to reinvent it. Maybe his version will make it through.

Warren Beatty writing, directing and starring in new comedy...
Warren Beatty's last film he directed was Bulworth in 1998, but his last screen outing was Town and Country which is regarded as the second biggest money-loser in cinematic history after The Adventures of Pluto Nash, saying that though he has some great films in his long career history, The Parallax View and Shampoo to name but two, so is it a good thing for him to come back? The Guardian have the story that he's directing his own script in which he will also star. So far though no one knows what to expect from this new comedy, let's hope it's the old magic of Beatty, the money making magic.

Penn Badgley as Jeff Buckley...
Penn Badgley, from Gossip Girl, is set to play Jeff Buckley in a biographical film about the singer called Greetings from Tim Buckley according to The Guardian. The film is one of two that are in development, and this one will concentrate on the relationship between Jeff Buckley and his father. It has the Buckley estate on board for the film, something that is a stumbling block for most biographical films.

Martin Campbell says Quantum of Solace was lousy...
The Guardian have a great comment from Martin Campbell who directed Casino Royale (Filmstalker review) regarding Quantum of Solace (Filmstalker review):

"Oh, I thought it was lousy...I just thought the story was pretty uninteresting … I didn't think the action was related to the characters. I just thought overall it was a bit of a mess really."

Well said, most of the audience agree too. He hedges his bets though saying that Sam Mendes' new Bond film will surely be terrific. Let's hope so.

Benedict Cumberbatch joins The Hobbit...
The Guardian tell us that Benedict Cumberbatch has joined The Hobbit to play Smaug. Barry Humphries will play the Goblin King, Evangeline Lilly will play Tauriel the Elf, and Luke Evans will play Bard. Peter Jackson confirmed them on his Facebook page.

Superman casts Julia Ormond and Russell Crowe...
Zack Snyder's Superman has cast Julia Ormond as Superman's mother according to The Hollywood Reporter and Russell Crowe as his father, well the Kryptonian parents anyway, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane are playing the Earth bound parents. According to another Hollywood Reporter story, Christopher Meloni is also in negotiations for the film.

Tom Cruise to play Jack Reacher...
Tom Cruise is in talks to play Jack Reacher, the lead of the Lee Child's series of books, in the upcoming film adaptation, and according to the author's comments in The Guardian through Deadline, it looks like he could be seriously considered for the role. That's despite the fact that the character is described as being very different to the size and stature of Cruise, but then it is all about the acting isn't it? Apparently this is a big deal. Reacher is a huge man who travels around America killing bad guys and the film, One Shot, is to be directed by Christopher McQuarrie, well known for his excellent writing. Sounds like a great pairing, and a strong role for a character actor.

James McAvoy replaces Michael Fassbender in Trance...
The title says it all, James McAvoy has replaced Michael Fassbender in Danny Boyle's next film Trance according to The Guardian. Well, almost all then. Trance is a remake of the 2001 British television film about an employee of an auction house who helps to steal an expensive painting and then gets amnesia and can't remember where he hid it.

David Strathairn joins Spielberg's Lincoln...
David Strathairn is set to play the Secretary of State William Seward in Steven Spielberg's Lincoln according to The Hollywood Reporter. This film has a great cast lined up, and it's Spielberg, how could you not be interested?

G.I. Joe sequel continues casting...
Yes the G.I. Joe sequel is still on with Channing Tatum returning and RZA and D.J. Cotrona joining the cast according to The Hollywood Reporter. Where's Action Man?

Nicole Kidman in talks for Paperboy...
Nicole Kidman is in talks to replace Sofia Vergara in Lee Daniels' Paperboy according to The Hollywood Reporter, Tobey Maguire has also dropped out. The story is about a reporter and his brother who investigate the case of a man on death row. Kidman would be playing a rather dark character, woohoo!
