Another Ripley Alien film?
We've heard Sigourney Weaver talking about the character Ellen Ripley before, and we've heard her talk about how she would like to return to play her and how she wouldn't, but this is perhaps the most open comment we've heard from her about Ripley and how she would like to return to play her once more.
The thing is, I totally agree with her. While Ripley was left at a place you could consider an ending for the character, Weaver still thinks that there's a story to complete, and I think there are others out there who agree and want to see one more Ripley film with a satisfying conclusion for her character.
Sure Ripley is something more than she was at the start of the series, but there's so much unresolved with her. The first point is that she's still up and walking about, and a company or companies who have invested so much in trying to get an Alien aren't going to stop now, and from here on she's the key.
Apart from that side there's the subtler side of her story, she's an unfulfilled mother who has now lost two children. You could argue that the scenes where she's lying in the nest in the hold of the ship in the last film could go some way to deal with that, but she's alive and they're all dead. She's still walking around with so much anger, hate, unresolved pain, in fact the last film raised more questions for her character than they answered.
"I would have liked to do one last story where we go back to the planet, where Ripley's history is resolved. But I do feel like her story is unfinished."
"I love the way the story has evolved, that every few years there's another voyage into that universe with another wonderful young director. And certainly I'm blessed with lots of different wonderful jobs, so I'm not sitting at home ruminating about all of that. If I was really caught up in it, I would find a logical story and try to get them behind it, but she may just be left circling earth."
She may indeed, and obviously that's no way for her character to be left, but emotionally and looking at the underlying stories there, her character has been made more complex and so much has been failed to be addressed. Couldn't she come back for one more?
Weaver isn't convinced herself, hitting sixty means that she's not action star material and she doesn't believe that the industry is happy with that sort of star.
"While I can't speak for them, I think for Fox, once you're sixty, you're not going to be starring in an action movie...I could definitely kick that alien's ass again. [Ripley]'s a smart hero, it's the way she thinks, but just looking at the way the business is..."
I believe she could do it too, after all her last outing as Ripley saw her play the strongest and best version of the character to date, well so I thought.
It's not just Ripley either, are we really finished with that Alien storyline? Not the prequel we're waiting for but following on from where we left them in Alien Resurrection?
