Dirty Dancing remake happening

DirtyDancing.jpgI'm rather surprised, more than rather surprised actually, by the fact that the remake of Dirty Dancing is actually going to go ahead, after all the film is a bit of a classic, one that is a girl's night in favourite (certainly with the ladies that I know anyway) and is synonymous with Patrick Swayze, particularly with Swayze topless.

It's not just that, it's the romance, the music, the coming of age, the first infatuation, holiday romance, and so on. It's a far more popular night in guilty pleasure than Footloose, and since that was getting a remake I guess why not?

What do you think? Are you a bit upset that Dirty Dancing is getting remade? That those Patrick Swayze, Jennifer Grey and Cynthia Rhodes roles are going to be given off to younger, hipper actors who will no doubt be transported to a modern day setting and perhaps even transferred to 3D.

Okay, I don't know about the 3D aspect, but considering there is now a director on board for the project Dirty Dancing is going ahead, and a remake must mean modernisation. How can the film be made in an aging and failing holiday camp?

One great thing about the news of the remake is who is going to be directing, Kenny Ortega Deadline tells us. He carries with him the potential to turn it into a High School Musical, but at the same time not only did he direct two episodes of the Dirty Dancing television series (yes there was one) but he was the choreographer on Dirty Dancing itself as well as other dance films like Shag and similarly well loved films like Pretty in Pink, St. Elmo's Fire and Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

He's got the dancing shoes that's for sure, and he can bring a musical to life on the big screen, plus he has experience with Dirty Dancing, but it still doesn't explain the need for a remake does it?

Think about this, what could be updated here? The music, the dancing style, and the location of the holiday getaway, and suddenly I'm thinking an all inclusive package in Ibiza. No, it's not the same.

The next question will be who is going to play the roles that Patrick Swayze, Jennifer Grey and Cynthia Rhodes are so well known for? Are they going to go for stars that we know or are they going to cast unknown young dancers?

I am glad that Ortega is still doing the choreography but I think it's a pointless remake. Swayze and Grey was Johnny & Baby. That's it. End of.
