New Red Tails trailer
Some have been critical of the new Red Tails trailer, the film that tells the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, an American World War II squadron of black pilots who were segregated in life but accepted as on in the air, and I have to agree.
Sure there are some fantastic effects in the trailer, but the dialogue and feel is rather cheesy, and seems to be more based on facial expressions than anything more meaty. This is the effects showcase version of the trailer without a doubt.
It shouldn't be that way though, for the cast includes David Oyelowo, Cuba Gooding Jr., Terrence Howard, Andre Royo as well as Michael B. Jordan, Method Man, Ne-Yo, Nate Parker, Tristan Wilds and Lee Tergesen, Gerald McRaney and Bryan Cranston with TV director Anthony Hemingway directing from a script by John Ridley, who is also mainly a television writer.
There's a lot of talent there, so why does the trailer feel the way it does? I think it's because the concentration here is on the effect sequences and the combat, there's not really a lot about the men themselves, and it's only Oyelowo that really comes across with any semblance of acting ability in the trailer.
It's here where I have to say that the effects and the combat sequences, which are themselves almost all effects sequences, are fantastic. Let's hope that we get a more balanced trailer next time.
