The trailer for the film Contraband does make it look like the film is a loose remake of the original as there's a lot more action here, mind you I haven't seen the original so I'm not sure what the style and tone was. This new Contraband looks like it's much of an action orientated thriller, but judging by the strength of the trailer I'm not complaining.
The film is a remake of Reykjavik-Rotterdam which was co-written and directed by Óskar Jónasson. Contraband is directed by Baltasar Kormákur who produced and starred in the original. This version stars Mark Wahlberg, Kate Beckinsale, Ben Foster, Giovanni Ribisi, J. K. Simmons, Lukas Haas, Caleb Landry Jones, Diego Luna and a certain Robert Wahlberg whom we don't get to hear that much about.
The trailer for Contraband looks tough and all out action, and Mark Wahlberg looks like he's got a perfect character to play, so often he doesn't get one to match but not so here.
The blurb goes like this:
Chris Farraday (Wahlberg) long ago abandoned his life of crime, but after his brother-in-law, Andy (Caleb Landry Jones), botches a drug deal for his ruthless boss, Tim Briggs (Giovanni Ribisi), Chris is forced back into doing what he does best--running contraband--to settle Andy's debt. Chris is a legendary smuggler and quickly assembles a crew with the help of his best friend, Sebastian (Ben Foster), to head to Panama and return with millions in counterfeit bills.
Things quickly fall apart and with only hours to reach the cash, Chris must use his rusty skills to successfully navigate a treacherous criminal network of brutal drug lords, cops and hit men before his wife, Kate (Kate Beckinsale), and sons become their target.
Powerful, exciting, action packed, and genuinely you don't know how it's going to play out from the trailer, there's a few uncertainties thrown in there to keep you guessing.
You can see the trailer here or over at Yahoo Movies in high definition. This is definitely worth a look.
