The Double trailer with Gere reveals everything

RichardGere.jpgThis trailer is unbelievable. It appears to reveal everything about the story behind the film, all barring the ultimate ending, and I find that incredible for what looked set to be a really strong thriller. I would urge the studio to withdraw this trailer immediately, but then I'm still going to post it as I know plenty of people who don't mind seeing the surprises in films before they watch them, and some who prefer it.

Still, for me it has totally ruined the film and this should be seen as an abject lesson in what not to put into your trailer. This is a shame as it stars Richard Gere, Martin Sheen, Topher Grace, Stephen Moyer, Stana Katic and Tammar Hassan.

That's a great line-up, and not to mention the fact that it's written by Michael Brandt, who directs, and Derek Haas who are responsible for scripts such as Wanted (Filmstalker review) and 3:10 to Yuma (Filmstalker review), these are strong thrillers, even Wanted is, when you peel back the science fiction elements that is, and The Double looked to be going that way too.

Of course if you've watched the trailer you'll know that really this shouldn't really be a surprise, if the trailer is revealing everything about the film, but the trailer should not be giving this much away, after all it seems like everything. I mean absolutely everything barring the closing scene.

I wonder if this is a big diversionary ruse and the film delivers something very different in the plot. Maybe it does, but from the trailer it doesn't seem like it, and there's no desire now for me to see the film apart from to clarify that it is everything I just saw.

If it is a ruse to push us in the wrong direction it's not very good, because there seems to be no other story here. There's no mystery, nothing is telling me that the story could go another way. I'm left feeling like I've seen everything.

Trailer makers please note, this is not what you want to do with your film unless you want to reduce ticket sales by a large percentage.

I'd be more than a little mad if I were the stars involved in the film that was spelled out in this way.

Let me tell you a non-spoiler plot. A retired CIA operative is called back into duty to team up with a younger agent to track down a notorious assassin who, it was thought, had been killed by the ex-operative years ago.

Warning to all, the following trailer for The Double looks as though it reveals everything.
