ParaNorman teaser suggests darker Coraline
ParaNorman does carry a similar feel to Coraline (Filmstalker review), and the writer and co-director Chris Butler was in fact on the art department of that film, as were much of the animation team. However while this might carry a similar look and feel to Coraline, the story is different, and considering how good Coraline was, is it really a big deal?
Sam Fell co-directs and the voice cast has a good starring list too with Anna Kendrick, John Goodman, Leslie Mann, Casey Affleck, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Bernard Hill some of the bigger names on the film.
The story for ParaNorman, which I think is a superb title that really does tickle me, almost as much as the closing scene with the toothpaste, goes like this:
In ParaNorman, a small town comes under siege by zombies. Who can it call? Only misunderstood local boy Norman (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee), who is able to speak with the dead. In addition to the zombies, he'll have to take on ghosts, witches and, worst of all, moronic grown-ups, to save his town from a centuries-old curse. But this young ghoul whisperer may find his paranormal activities pushed to their otherworldly limits.
Watching the teaser trailer you can already see some of the fantastic imagination that went into Coraline (Filmstalker review) in ParaNorman. I just hope that the story pulls through as well as it did with that film and that there's an equally powerful emotional core that draws you in.
