Star Trek 2 confirms British casting
We've been hearing all sorts of rumours about the casting for Star Trek 2, names firing about and suggestions about who the lead characters will be, and the ongoing debate about whether they are bringing Khan back or not - and by the way I don't think they should in an alternative universe it's just going to be too much like the original and more comparisons will ensue.
Well now we're hearing some solid casting news, it started before the holidays but today two more names have been announced, two British names, and one of them is a rather interesting choice.
Benedict Cumberbatch has been selected for the film, the man who plays Sherlock in the BBC television series and who was recently seen in the excellent Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and he'll be appearing in War Horse and the two Hobbit films this year. He's a busy man and definitely building up his film career.
Now it seems that he's signed up to the 2013 Star Trek 2, the time altering Star Trek series that started off so well and looks set to continue that way. The word from Deadline is that he's been cast but no one knows in which role as yet, hero or villain. I'd suggest with his looks and his ability to turn a dramatic performance they might be looking to play him as a villain, after all British actors do make good villains abroad don't they?
J.J. Abrams, Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are writing the sequel for Star Trek (Filmstalker review) right now and Abrams will be filming Star Trek 2 in 3D, with lots of lens flare no doubt.
Other casting news comes through Variety who reveal that Noel Clarke has also been signed up for the film, another British talent, but they do have some news on what character he will play, a family man with a wife and young daughter. Yes, that's all they have, but it's something.
Great news that more British actors are heading for the film, but the question is who are Weller and Cumberbatch going to play? Both are ideally suited for bad characters and Cumberbatch hasn't been playing a lot of them so far, will he get his chance, and does it really have to be Khan?
