Short Circuit remake gains writer
There's a new writer aboard the remake of Short Circuit, and with the same director still attached it's clear what direction the film is headed, and it's not one that's going to capture the fans of the original I wouldn't think.
Tim Hill is still directing, think Hop, Alvin and the Chipmunks and Garfield 2, all CG heavy kids films and now we have the writer of Dr. Dolittle: Tail to the Chief, a direct to video sequel with the daughter of Dolittle doing, well, little.
While I'm not pre-judging the film...oh wait, I really am aren't I and there's no way I can't say I'm not. Look, the original Short Circuit, about the army's latest piece of technology a weaponised robot which gains artificial intelligence and goes out to search for its own identity, is charming, funny and really does grab your heart. It's a great film that makes you fall in love with Johnny 5, essentially a child looking for purpose and meaning in its new found life.
Looking at the past history of the writer Matt Lieberman and director Tim Hill I don't think we're considering the same type of film or character here, and it will undoubtedly become a CG heavy lowest denominator kid's film.
The Hollywood Reporter say in their news article that this is intended for the family audience, so maybe they are trying for something more, but then the Chipmunks, Garfield and Dolittle were all family films.
Bob Weinstein, co-chairman of The Weinstein Co. who oversees Dimension who is delivering the film said that:
"We are looking for Short Circuit to be our next family franchise."
Really? That's a big hope for the film especially when it doesn't seem as though it's really been backed up with a big writer and director, or maybe by franchise he does mean something like Garfield or Chipmunks, they've had a few films.
