Justice League to rival Avengers?

JusticeLeagueofAmerica.jpgWell I have to admit that I really thought that Avengers, The Avengers, Avengers Assemble or whatever you want to call it, wouldn't work on screen. There were too many big characters to build up, pull together and introduce to each other, all before anything really happened. However they did it, okay it was a slimmed down Avengers, but they did it.

So is it too crazy to imagine that the DC Comics fed superhero team story Justice League would be far behind? Well the attempt to make it a few years ago failed, but that hasn't stopped Warner Bros. who are looking to begin the project again from the script up.

This is a rumour at this stage however as Warner Bros. seem to be keeping very secret about the whole project which is being touted as a reaction to the success of the Avengers Assemble but since the project has already been through the production run before and this is hitting the scripting stage again I don't think is a fair comparison, after all we'll be waiting a while for this new iteration.

According to the Variety story Will Beall is writing the new script for the film. You might know him from some of his writing credits on Castle or the fact that he's written the script for the upcoming Gangster Squad, the latest script for the remake of Logan's Run and is apparently working on the script for Lethal Weapon 5, oh yes I did say that.

You might remember that George Miller was working on a previous version of Justice League that was very close to getting made but it just didn't make it.

They were looking at having Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter and the Flash, and casting was pretty much locked with D.J. Cotrona as Superman; Armie Hammer as Batman; Megan Gale as Wonder Woman; Common as Green Lantern; Hugh Keays-Byrne as Martian Manhunter; Adam Brody as the Flash, and apparently Teresa Palmer was set to play Talia al Ghul.

It sounded a good cast, although somewhat odd that both Batman and Superman were recast while they were in active films under other actors, and perhaps that's one reason why the film was put on hold, that and the official story regarding tax breaks. Perhaps there was something else to do with the upcoming Avengers film, one that had most of its characters lined up to be in their own films before pulling into the ensemble film, an important fact I harped on about during the production of this first film.

Mind you looking at the above list of who was set to be in the original there was just Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter and the Flash to have their own films and be introduced to the cinema audience, mind you there's a good case to argue that Green Lantern didn't really get that, so actually there was still a bit of ground work to be done.

So does that mean we'll see them in their own films before Justice League arrives? I don't think so. Like Avengers Assemble we'll have to have a couple of characters introduced and built either at the start of the film or with other superhero led films but there doesn't seem to be any of those on the slate, and that's my concern.

Justice League will have to tell the origin stories of three characters for the audience before moving onto the ensemble film because they haven't been told on screen for this audience yet, and remember the audience the studio are going for is the current PG-13 audience, not the existing fan base.

It's a lot of work, but it looks as though Warner Bros. are setting off on the right foot with Will Beall writing the new script. Perhaps we'll see a different line-up of superheroes in the first Justice League film?
