Another Catwoman film?
Not likely. Let me just say that up front. Despite all the headlines you're seeing about Anne Hathaway saying she would do a Catwoman film and the positive comments from Christopher Nolan about it, it's all just media spin and clever quote usage.
Let's face it, Catwoman isn't a very strong character and to be honest I don't really see why she was in The Dark Knight Rises and I think it might have been a better film without her character. Even without that, would a Catwoman film work?
I'm sure a film about a female cat burglar would work but let's not fool ourselves into thinking that she's a superhero character, far from it. A Catwoman film should be about a female cat burglar who gets in over her head on a heist and ends up being chased for what she has or what she knows, and far from wanting to do the right thing she's wanting to sell the information she has for money, even if it's back to those who stole it. That would be a Catwoman film.
However it's not going to happen, after all you just have to read the comments from Anne Hathaway and Christopher Nolan about the idea, comments that came from direct questions about the possibility of a Catwoman film so not even led by them.
Firstly Christopher Nolan was asked about a Catwoman spin-off film through The Playlist, even though he said he's finished with his trilogy.
"For me, Gotham and these characters, I'm done. I've told our story and I'm moving on..."
He did add however:
"I certainly think she deserves it, she's incredible."
So it's not happening with him, and he was answering a direct question about Catwoman, he never came up with the idea.
"I'm interested if he's interested...I think it would be lovely to see more of her but only if it's with the right people. She lives in this Gotham City and so it would have to be established by the people who have made this Gotham City. For me, at least."
I'm sure she's aware of Nolan's position and she should be savvy enough to know that he was probably led into the quote so she's being guarded about it but she's also saying she wouldn't do it without Nolan and his team, and quite rightly so.
Yet even if they were all keen it would have to be a prequel story in Gotham, after all now her fate is tied up with another character and it would be very difficult to separate them without opening up the other character's fate.
No I don't think it'll happen, there's not enough there for Catwoman to make it in her own film.
However, don't you think there's a place for Nolan to return to Gotham and to Batman in a good few years? There's a perfect story that would be crying out for him especially considering where Batman has been left. Let's see where this lies in ten years time.
