I was interested when I first heard about Chasing Mavericks, a film that looked at the surfing legend Jonny Moriarty who conquered an amazingly mammoth wave when he was just sixteen years old and starring Gerard Butler has the mentor who inspires him to do it, I thought we were in for a real life story.

However the trailer has every single beat point of the atypical Hollywood cheesy inspirational story there is. At least there are some amusing moments and, if you like that thing, surfing.

The blurb for Chasing Mavericks goes like this:

Surfer Jay Moriarity sets out to ride the Northern California break known as Mavericks.

There you go. It comes from director Curtis Hanson who has made a number of different styles of films, including the uplifting and inspirational tales and something called L.A. Confidential which you might know more than anything else he's done. Mind you, that doesn't compare to this.
