Taken 2 trailer delivers another iconic saying
A new trailer for Taken 2 has arrived while I was off celebrating my wife's birthday, and this is a much fuller trailer although it still contains two moments I find a little groan worthy, and one regards the entire set-up of the film.
Taken (Filmstalker review) was written by Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen and directed by Pierre Morel whereas Taken 2 is directed by Olivier Megaton although it retains the same writing team. Now it sees the mother in the same position that the daughter was in the first film and the new trailer shows us that the daughter may well be picking up some tips from her father.
Liam Neeson returns as Bryan Mills, the ex-special operative who is forced to use his skills long after he's retired to save his own family. Last time in Taken (Filmstalker review) it was his daughter who was sold into the sex trade and he raced to save killing many of the people behind the organisation, this time those on the other side of the organisation are out for revenge, and it just so happens that Mills and his family are in their country.
It's here that the first sticking point arrives for me, I thought it was pretty clear what country the people behind the organisation who kidnapped Mills daughter were from, so why he would go there and then be so overjoyed that his wife and daughter have arrived is beyond me. Perhaps that issue is addressed later on in the film itself.
The other issue I have is that there was a need for the Mills character to say something almost identical to the key catch phrase from the first film, especially when there's a new phrase for him at the end of the trailer as well as the potential for the bad guy to have his powerful speech and turn this trailer into the antitheses of the original.
Regardless the trailer does look good fun for Taken 2 with both Maggie Grace and Famke Janssen returning for their roles and the fantastic Janssen getting more of a role than the previous outing. What's also different this time around is how much the daughter is involved in the film, from this trailer it doesn't look like she's a victim and is in fact getting involved in trying to save her mother.
