New RoboCop revealed
Some set photos have been released online that show us what the new RoboCop is going to look like and its causing some concern among the online film community. While I can see their complaints about how the suit might look similar to others I do think there are limited ways to make the character look without appearing so different it just doesn't work.
I don't think the issue is RoboCop more the amount of other films that have had characters in stylised and slightly futuristic body armour.
The new shots from the set of the remake of RoboCop show the actor with what looks like to be the RoboCop suit on, heading on or off set. As soon as they were posted the negative and positive comments, although since we're talking Internet comments mainly negative, appeared.
The main problem that people appear to have with it is that it does look so similar to other suits used in films from Batman to G.I. Joe. While you have to agree you also have to wonder how dissimilar they could go without the audience accepting it, after all there are only so many ways to show body armour and the more elaborate they get the less they seem practical and useable.
We also have to remember that there will be some work on the suit yet in post production, although to be honest I imagine there won't be that much on the raw suit itself just on the scenes of it shifting configuration, etc.
Let's remember that the suit does not make the man, or the character. I wonder how different people were expecting the suit to be from those that we've seen in other armoured up character films? At least this is very different to the original.
Let's also remember what kind of film we're talking about and not get hung up on the suit itself. José Padilha directs, the man who brought us Ônibus 174 (Bus 174) (Filmstalker review), Elite Squad (Tropa de Elite) (Filmstalker review) and Elite Squad: The Enemy Within (Tropa de Elite 2 - O Inimigo Agora É Outro) (Filmstalker review); one of the writers on the screenplay was James Vanderbilt who has films from Zodiac to The Losers (Filmstalker review) on his credits, and the cast includes Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Abbie Cornish, Clive Owen, Jackie Earle Haley, Joel Kinnaman, Michael Keaton, Michael Kenneth Williams, Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Jay Baruchel.
Add up all those names and talent and we're not talking about the RoboCop you might be expecting just by looking at the suit and connecting it with films gone before. In fact how can anyone even judge the film based on the suit when we're talking about so much talent?
You can see the full images of the RoboCop suit over at Coming Soon who have a couple of images from the set.
