Bond writers leave and reveal big name

JamesBond.jpgWe heard the rumour that John Logan who co-wrote the successful Bond film Skyfall (Filmstalker review) was set to return to write the next Bond film and perhaps even the one after that, well that's taken a fair leap forward with news that the two writers who have worked on many a Bond script for some time, including the recent Quantum of Solace (Filmstalker review), have decided to call it a day.

With their departure they dropped a rather big hint about the next script and perhaps some big news about who could be involved in Bond 24.

Sam Mendes directed a superb Bond film with Skyfall (Filmstalker review) and there has been a lot of talk for him to return, he's been guarded though saying that he gave Skyfall his all, that he's done what he wanted to do with Bond and isn't sure if he would return. He does leave the door open though by saying that he would return if the story was right. Well, that just might be the case.

Neal Purvis and Robert Wade have written on The World Is Not Enough, Die Another Day, Casino Royale (Filmstalker review), Quantum of Solace (Filmstalker review), and Skyfall (Filmstalker review) so while they have been hit hard for Solace they have had their fingers in a lot of good scripts, not so now though as they have announced that they're leaving the franchise.

Speaking at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival they revealed that they were actually going to leave after Quantam of Solace but were thankful to end with Skyfall, and end on a much higher note I would say.

"When we were originally asked to come in to meet the Bond people, we weren't expecting to be walking straight into a meeting with Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson...Usually there are many other layers of people that stop you getting to the head honchos and we certainly were not expecting to be kept around for 15 years...We're very happy to have done five Bond movies, I think we've gotten it to a good place."

I think despite Solace they can hold their heads up high for what they've achieved with the franchise and the strong writing they've delivered for some of the best Bond films around.

They had plenty more to say but it was the following that caught my eye in particular as Robert Wade said:

"I know that John Logan and Sam Mendes have come up with a plot for another one, which takes the pressure off because these films take up a lot of time."

They've come up with the plot for another one? Well it would make sense if Logan is here writing Bond 24 and perhaps even 25, but what does this mean for Mendes? Is he back on board or did he just lend his hand to the developing of the idea, perhaps something that could have easily popped up during the production for Skyfall?

It's hard to really know what actually has happened until we get an official announcement but two regular Bond writers are gone, it would appear that John Logan has returned from Skyfall to write at least one more with a story idea that Mendes has helped out with. It's another decisive period in the Bond franchise.

The question now will be if Mendes decides to come back to direct it, but it may be some time before we know that for sure.

The sheer gutlessness of the people who make the decisions of the major Hollywood studios, and I want you to quote me, is terrifying.
