New colourful Oz: The Great and Powerful trailer
A new trailer has arrived online for Oz: The Great and Powerful, the Wizard of Oz prequel from Sam Raimi and it looks pretty glorious.
There's a great cast with James Franco as the magician that travels to Oz before Dorothy and encounters the amazing world and Raimi's imagination looks like it's going to compliment L. Frank Baum's perfectly.
When the trailer starts it does look very cool with the picture coming through the older style aspect ratio before it expands into the world of Oz in glorious bright colours. I have to admit that at this point I was thinking it looked a little twee, but as the cast of the witches with Mila Kunis as Theodora, Rachel Weisz as Evanora and Michelle Williams as Glinda appeared, so did the story reveal itself.
Here's the blurb for Oz: The Great and Powerful so you can get your head around the story:
Disney's fantastical adventure "Oz: The Great and Powerful," directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum's beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he's hit the jackpot--fame and fortune are his for the taking--that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone's been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity--and even a bit of wizardry--Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.
There's a heavier blurb that's carried with the article in the L.A. Times that points us to the trailer but it describes quite a bit of the story and I think the blurb and the trailer do fine just as they are.
You can see the trailer for Oz: The Great and Powerful over at Apple Trailers, I'd head there right now and watch it for it's a cracking trailer and does show that Sam Raimi is really spreading his talent wide producing a classic remake of a gory horror film while delivering this imaginative and amazing vision of Oz.
