The Host trailer arrives online

TheHost.jpgI've just watched the trailer for The Host and I have to say I've seen what I expected to see.

The writer of Twilight wrote The Host, Stephenie Meyer, and so you'll expect the themes to be similar, judging from the trailer they are very similar and while the science fiction might provide the different world it's all going to be teen angst and unrequited love.

Sure there are some science fiction things in there and I know the story does offer something more but watching the trailer all I'm thinking is Twilight with aliens.

Andrew Niccol has adapted and directed the film so maybe he's bringing something extra to the story, after all he has films like Gattaca, The Truman Show, Lord of War (Filmstalker review) and In Time (Filmstalker review) to his name and that's an interesting mix to weigh up against the possibility of a film of The Host.

There's a good cast list too with Saoirse Ronan, Max Irons, William Hurt and Diane Kruger and you can see some of them in the trailer with Kruger adding something a little more than the expected story. Still, I would have liked to have seen a trailer that didn't offer Space Twilight and concentrated more on the other aspects, distancing itself and showing that this is a step forward and not more of the same.

Oh I know that the marketing people want to concentrate on that and get the Twilight audience across but surely they need to attract new audiences too? Actually no they don't, a new Twilight would make them all the returns they needed.

Here's the blurb for The Host:

Based on the best-selling novel by Twilight Saga author Stephenie Meyer, The Host is a riveting story about the survival of love and the human spirit in a time of war. Our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their bodies remain intact. Most of humanity has succumbed.
