Only God Forgives trailer, Gosling being Gosling
I don't get it, I really don't. Everything I've seen Ryan Gosling in he's playing a similar character. I've not yet been captured by his performances as others have been and perhaps that's because I've not seen the right film yet, and the trailer for Only God Forgives doesn't win me over at all for his character.
The film does look visually exciting and I'm always excited for a Kristen Scott Thomas performance, she is a wonderful actress, and let's not forget that Nicolas Winding Refn has written and directed the film. Yet Gosling doesn't do anything exciting for me here.
There are some great things about the trailer for Only God Forgives, Kristen Scott Thomas being one of them - oh did I say that already? - and her ominous opening line and the superb visuals, not to mention the fact that it's based in Thailand and there looks like there could be a strong clash of cultures.
You just know that Nicolas Winding Refn is going to deliver another exciting looking and superbly paced film that will have you captured from very early on.
At the same time though I wonder how minimal Ryan Gosling's character dialogue will be? After all he has to look doughy eyed, be overly quiet, mumble when he speaks, and generally be a bad boy. In the trailer that's exactly what he'll be doing, just like a number of his roles before this.
"That new Ryan Gosling trailer makes me want to SHAKE RYAN GOSLING AND SCREAM 'WHY ARE YOU RETIRING!?!' AND THEN FRENCH HIS MOUTH!"
Really? I'm way more upset we're losing Steven Soderbergh and the diverse and powerful films he offers. Mind you, let's be realistic, it won't be long before Gosling is back and hopefully he'll have moved on from these roles and be offering something more.
Here's the trailer through TrailerAddict for Only God Forgives, a film which simply tells us that a Thai Police Lieutenant and a gangster settle their differences in a Thai boxing match:
