Trailer arrives for We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks
Alex Gibney has directed a number of documentaries, the most memorable for me being Taxi to the Darkside (Filmstalker review) but equally I could mention Freakonomics or Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room to get your attention. So with his name attached I'm much more likely to watch a film about Julian Assange, without him I think I might be tempted to avoid it.
So it is that it finds itself on my list of films to watch at the Edinburgh International Film Festival this year and I do hope that it turns out to be better than I'm expecting.
I think the documentary itself will be good, after all we are talking about Alex Gibney, it's just I wonder if the real story behind We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks, and more importantly behind Julian Assange, will be that interesting. In fact the dramatised version of events in the film The Fifth Estate might turn out to be far more exciting than the real thing.
Here is the trailer for the upcoming We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks through Empire, it's worth a look because it does appear dramatic but then there are also flashes of what could be the real Assange, and those aren't the crusader for truth and decency that we might expect.
