Non-Hollywood scenes

ExclamationMark.jpgI can't remember who mentioned it, and they can let us know in the comments, but someone mentioned the idea for a feature of scenes in films that really do go against the norm for Hollywood.

What they and I mean by that are when you expect one thing in a film and the exact opposite occurs, an outcome that is far from what Hollywood would normally allow from a character or film, something that really does surprise you because it's just not what was expected.

Let me give you a few examples and then we'll see how many more you can come up with.

Oscars Best Picture token gesture?

Oscar.jpgThe news is that the Academy Awards is upping the number of nominees from five to ten for the Best Picture category, and my initial thought that this was a mere token gesture to the film fans who were more than outraged that The Dark Knight (Filmstalker review) never got nominated, and that's something that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' board of governors admitted to.

So we're going to see another five films nominated, but if we were to look at last year, we'd probably still see the same winners and the same amount of winners, so token gesture it is, or perhaps there's something more to it?

Snyder talks 300 sequel

300.jpgZack Snyder has been talking about the possible sequel or prequel to 300 (Filmstalker review), and revealed where Frank Miller is with the story, and what some of the plans might be for the film.

Reading his comments I'd say he's more than interested in going for the sequel, or prequel, and there's nothing here to suggest that the project isn't moving forward.

The Box trailer online

TheBox.jpgThe first trailer for The Box is online. It stars Cameron Diaz and James Marsden, as a couple who receive a strange offer to solve their financial woes.

Kind of a supernatural thriller/Indecent Proposal for the credit crunch generation.

Facebook film is book adaptation

TheAccidentalBillionaire.jpgWe heard yesterday that David Fincher was in talks to direct the Facebook film. With a script being written by Aaron Sorkin, it already has two big names linked to it.

Now more details have emerged to what the film is all about. It is actually an adaptation of The Accidental Billionaires.

Watchmen Director's Cut cinema release dates

ZackSnyder.jpgWatchmen: Director's cut was set for a cinema release a while back, which I would have happily gone along to and watched.

But after the news that the number of cinemas was being reduced, they have announced exactly where the Director's Cut will be seen. Looks like a lot of us will be waiting for the Blu-ray DVD.

Another Predators director?

Predator.jpgThe rumour mill is going a little mad over the Predators film, and there's been talk of another director in the mix, in fact I believe the rumour right now is that there are seven possible directors, and this is just one.

Last we heard it was Neil Marshall who was being considered for the the job of directing the new film destined to bring the franchise back to life (another hopeful rumour, this time from the studio!), but now there's another name attached.

Edinburgh International Film Festival: Day Nine

EIFF.pngThe ninth day of the Edinburgh International Film Festival kicked off with a missed bus and a panic thinking I wasn't going to get to my first screening, Pontypool.

Luckily I made it, before my fellow colleagues who have been co-stalking the festival, and I was glad I did make it for Pontypool turned out to be a really good film, if a little odd.

Now another two studios have passed on the project as well, has Moneyball struck out already?

Aronofsky on or off RoboCop?

DarrenAronofsky.jpgThe rumours are rife, and if you saw Darren Aronofsky speak at the Edinburgh International Film Festival this year you would know that the man doesn't really want to talk about it, nor really about any of his future work.

However reports have been that he's on the RoboCop remake, and today we hear that the rumours are he's off, and now back on, and...they are rife, but who to believe?

Clinton and Blair dropped for Bond?

PeterMorgan.jpgPeter Morgan has reportedly dropped out of the HBO and BBC Films drama The Special Relationship which looked at the political and personal relationship between the U.S. President Bill Clinton and the British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Morgan was set to direct the script he had written, but now has pulled out of the role and passed it over to Richard Loncraine, who directed the Renée Zellweger comedy My One and Only, the terrible Firewall (Filmstalker review) and the romantic comedy Wimbledon.

Footage seen of Cameron's Avatar

Avatar.jpgJames Cameron and cast have been talking about Avatar at the Cinema Expo in Amsterdam and while they were there they shared some footage of the film with the audience.

James Cameron is still adamant that this is the future and that it will take over from normal pictures, and the audience apparently went mad for the footage, despite the fact that the footage we've seen is still unfinished.

Taken sequel begins

Taken.jpgProduction on Taken 2 had begun, at least at the very early stages, and that's from the company EuropaCorp themselves who reveal the news amongst some other announcements.

There's still a big gap in the deal though, is Liam Neeson going to be taking up the role in the sequel? More to the point is what is the story going to be, another kidnap drama? Another look at the people behind the original plot? Perhaps a look to the man's past?

Hitman sequel?

Hitman.jpgHitman could be gaining a sequel, if the rumours are right, and the writer has been hired already.

While many might think that there doesn't deserve to be a second Hitman (Filmstalker review) film, I disagree. Although there were a number of problems with the first film it was a solid adaptation of the character to film, and Timothy Olyphant was good as the main character.

Fincher on Facebook Film

DavidFincher.jpgDavid Fincher has apparently started discussions to direct the film about the birth and rise of the Internet social networking site Facebook.

There's no more information than that from the article, other than reciting the same old news about who is behind it, and so I find it hard to believe that David Fincher could genuinely be interested in the film.

Weaver on Ghostbusters 3 and Alien prequel

SigourneyWeaver.jpgOne person who we haven't heard much from on Ghostbusters 3, is Sigourney Weaver. The other three main actors and the director are waiting on a finished script they like.

But Weaver sounds like she isn't that fussed for appearing in it at all. She also talked about the planned Alien prequel.
