Retreat trailer offers mixed bag

JamieBell.jpgI just watched the trailer for Retreat, a film starring a light cast of Cillian Murphy, Jamie Bell, Thandie Newton and Jimmy Yuill, and I have to admit I'm rather disappointed.

First there's the fact that I struggled to understand a word that the mumbling character of Bell was saying, and secondly that the trailer seems to confirm exactly what it shouldn't be about the story and therefore it's potentially giving the entire game away.

Perhaps this isn't that important when it comes to the film itself, but right now the core seems to be that two people on a remote island are uncertain about the fate of the world around them. They come across an injured and armed man whom they are very suspicious of and seems to be trying to convince them that an epidemic is sweeping across the outside world and it's very dangerous, they need to stay there, in isolation, and be safe.

That's not what the trailer tells us. Here's the blurb for Retreat which comes, along with the trailer, through the excellent Quiet Earth:

Kate and Martin escape from personal tragedy to an Island Retreat. Cut off from the outside world, their attempts to recover are shattered when a Man is washed ashore, with news of airborne killer disease that is sweeping through Europe.

Okay, sounds intriguing, but watch the trailer and there's nothing there to try and confuse you and balance an argument, it's clearly saying Jamie Bell's character is a mumbling, incoherent psycho and everything outside is fine, these two are just trapped by him and need to escape, it even seems to reveal a big moment which would be a turning point for the story in most other films, here it's all in the trailer.

To me that seems to have defeated one of the main purposes, to make us second guess the motives of this character and perhaps believe him for a while, making it more than just a "trapped by a psycho and let's try and escape" film.

However, give it a chance, maybe this is a poor cut of the trailer, mind you it does look spoiler packed:
