The Host teaser, what's the point?

TheHost-Meyer.jpgThe trailer for The Host came out last week and I purposely avoided saying anything about it, after all the teaser told us next to nothing apart from the fact that The Host was being made into a film and people had funny eyes, oh and Saoirse Roman is in it, if you recognise her that is.

Other than that there's nothing. If you haven't read The Host and aren't a huge follower of film then you'll most likely switch off while watching it, and I'm left wondering why they bothered.

Of course it does tell us that it comes from Stephenie Meyer, and that's probably the big sell, if you've read Twilight you'll be on board in a flash, and at the end we do get a reminder that she wrote the Twilight saga, again if you haven't read them and are interested this might grab you.

It's not until the end that it goes for the film fan with a reminder that Andrew Niccol wrote and directed the film version. Who is he? Well he wrote and directed Gattaca, The Lord of War and In Time (Filmstalker review), and wrote The Truman Show.

Okay the score is powerful and you do get the idea that this is something like post-Body Snatchers with some people still having free will as we're told we'll all be assimilated, but that aside, if you don't know much about the story you'll be way off track I would imagine.

Here's the blurb for The Host:

Based on the best-selling novel by Twilight Saga author Stephenie Meyer, The Host is a riveting story about the survival of love and the human spirit in a time of war. Our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their bodies remain intact. Most of humanity has succumbed.

Well, that matches the trailer, what about the book? That blurb (Amazon.co.uk / Amazon.com) tells a slightly different story:

Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that take over the minds of human hosts while leaving their bodies intact. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, didn't expect to find its former tenant refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

As Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of Jared, a human who still lives in hiding, Wanderer begins to yearn for a man she's never met. Reluctant allies, Wanderer and Melanie set off to search for the man they both love.

Ah look, it's a teen love triangle with fantastical elements. That's not what you get from the film blurb and the teaser which comes through TrailerAddict:

I'm not getting it, but I'm sure Twilight fans are.

Unless its a film about contact lenses, I don't see what the trailer offers.
